Deep soul thinking fits well into a concept discussed by futurist and Wired Magazine founder Kevin Kelly in his book The Inevitable. In a world of exponential change and terrifyingly advanced technology, many people think that the key to the future will be cyborgs, or powerful partnerships between humans and Artificial Intelligence. Tech companies are even this moment implanting microchips under human skin1. I find the thought of linking up with machines eerily dystopian, and to some it may suggest the decline of mankind.
But Kevin Kelly has a more hopeful view. He believes that advancements in technology and the changes they cause will push us to further define what it means to be human, just as we have always done when confronted with new inventions like the printing press, tractors, and laptops. We will be forced to rethink our roles, beliefs, goals, and identities. We will ask, “What are humans for?” He posits that one essential human role is to invent new intelligences2.
